about

Terry Galvin. Now that's a name which brings back a lot of memories of the 90's. And no, it has nothing to do with mosh pits, flannel shirts, choker necklaces, and embarrassing "tribal" tattoos. Okay maybe a few chokers. I worked quite a few late night jobs back in those days which put quite a damper on having much of a social life. Instead of whooping it up after work, the simple pleasures I had to look forward to were a carton of ice cream, a bag of potato chips with clam dip, a 6 pack of Blitz Weinhardt's and a date with the old 19" television. Each night I had at least three stations fighting for my attention. Channel 12 had it's locally programmed "Moonlight Theater" which ran an odd mix of movies from midnight to six everyday. You could see flicks such as "with Six You Get Eggroll", "A man Called Horse", or "Tourist Trap", sometimes on the same night even. Sure, PBS might be showing some classic Fellini or Bergman Films, but sometimes what you really need is some real TV, We're talking holy schlock, batman TV. Get up and manually switch over to channel 6 for some Xena and Sweating Bullets. 2 had Earth: Final Conflict and VIP. 49 would air the reconstituted Outer Limits and Friday the 13th: The Series. Late night syndicated television was in it's golden age. And with 90's late night TV, all roads lead to Terry Galvin.

Much of Galvin's early life still remains much a mystery as well as his 21st century life. Some might even say he simply IS 90's late night TV and can't exist outside of that channel. Sure, there have been a lot of Galvin sightings reported around the world, some even say that he is the one responsible for those "Resurrect Dead" tiles that were mysteriously surfacing on city streets around the globe near the turn of the century, but some even question his existence itself and toss him into the "Mandala Effect" dust bin. His story is much more Star Wars holiday shit show than Sinbad's genie movie, which yes I rented out to people and it DID exist.

Galvin is Real

Galvin's name first surfaces in the writing credits for the classic erotic detective thriller "The Nigh Beat" which was also the first in a continuing trend for Galvin. After just 3 episodes Terry was handed the keys to the castle and took the director's chair from retiring giant Michael "Muzz" Skillings. Soon after the success of Nigh Beat, Tri Corn Productions put him in charge of producing their entire Fall 1991 after hours line up and history was made.

Welcome to the Wastelands

Sonic Wastelands was the story of a rock band touring through space only to crash land on a planet used as an interplanetary junk yard. The worst part was that the planet had no music venues to speak of. Seeing that the band's ship wasn't going any where, they decide to convert the broken down star cruiser into the galaxy's hottest new rock club, Sonic Wastelands. One of the reoccurring themes in the show was noted in the 2024 cult film "Hi-Way to Halden". One of that film's protagonists walk's by a TV airing Wastelands and remarks "Hey man, isn't this that the show about that band in space and someone is always turning into some sort of space monster?" In a nutshell, yes it is.

While the first episode was under production Galvin had a vitriolic falling out with Tri Corn's music supervisor and chief composer, Ritchie Richards. It was reported that while on set Galvin screamed at Richards for writing music that was closer to Hair Metal than the new wave space punk Galvin asked for. When the crew questioned his musical ability, he infamously retorted with " Oh, so is John f---ing Carpenter the only f---ing director allowed to write his own f---ing music? Where do you dumb ass kids think I was in the f---ing 70's? Terry Galvin was in NYC doing lines with Richard Hell and Blondie while you stinking babies were shitting your Pampers watching Scooby f---ing Doo!"

The music used for this collection is taken from a few of the classic episodes. "Robot Bordello" was from the episode "I Clone the Body Electric" about a sinister robot prostitution franchise which uses it's android companions to collect DNA samples for genetic engineering experiments.

Bathroom Crawlers was taken from the very special episode Galvin was pressured to make after being pulled over while driving past 90 under the influence of cocaine, MDMA, and mescaline in the California desert. The judge was such a fan that he insisted Galvin not be sentenced to prison and instead make a series of anti-drug PSA's and dedicate at least one entire episode to drug abuse. The result is the episode "Star Dust" in which the titular drug makes it's way into the club . After Krystal tosses a dealer's supply into the toilet, it mutates sewer slugs into hideous mutant creatures which bite patrons on the butt thus infecting the crowd and transforming them into crazed slug mutants.

"Space Chase" is self explanatory and recycled through many episodes. When Galvin was cornered about this his response was, " Did you or anyone else ever question Gene [Roddenberry] about that God damned fight music or that sachrine syrup love theme showing up in every other Trek episode? Didn't f---ing think so! At least my song is a God damned hit!" Space Chase never entered any charts.

We close the Sonic Wasteland's portion of the album with "Crystal Magnetar" a song performed by a band of refugees searching for a new home world after fleeing theirs when a star goes supernova.

With the waning success of Wastelands bringing the series to a close after 3 seasons, Galvin came back to earth for the buddy cop classic, "Boat Cops".

Boat cops depicts the adventures of Gary and Jerry who are dishonorably discharged from the Coast Guard for a crime they didn't commit. They start their own security firm which patrols international waters going after drug smugglers and human trafficking. When they're not chasing down baddies they spend their time in Boat Town charming the ladies and pumping 2 bit crooks for info. Jet's Coffee was used often for diner scenes while Hamster Wheel Boogie was written by Galvin while under house arrest for the earlier mentioned drug charges. It was performed at the Sand Bar by the house band in the episode "Who's Sleeping with the Fishes?"

Our collection concludes with 3 selections from "Moonlight Diaries". Diaries was a shameless attempt at uniting the erotic sleaze of shows like "Silk Stockings" with the supernatural horror of classic anthology shows. While many have speculated that Joss Whedon had blatantly plagiarized "Forever Knight" for his own vampire detective show, none of that comes close to the "coincidences" between his shows and and Galvin's.

The tireless staff at Gaunttlet Music continues to sort through the recently released tapes from the music vaults of the long defunct Tri Corn Productions. All of the company's content had been sealed as evidence since 1998 when the company was shut down to due to a laundry list of charges including wire fraud, tax evasion, and drug trafficking to name a few. It has been widely speculated that Galvin himself called in the feds after having his last 3 paychecks bounce and discovering that he had been cut out of all royalties and song publishing from Tri Corn. While there have been reported Galvin sightings, many say it's safe to assume that he may no longer be alive or quite possibly under witness protection. The world may never know the answer to that puzzle, but it will be a better place now that his music is finally available with the possibility of future releases down the road.

One thing that I am sure of is this.

Terry Galvin's story is written in the Moonlight Diary.
